We believe that having an enjoyable towing experience is one factor of having an enjoyable camping experience (although sway control is also used widely in utility towing also). In order to provide this, we use several means to provide the best ride quality possible. For fifth wheels, you can use cushioned pinboxes (click here), but for tongued trailers, we find it's not the "chucking" action, but sway and bounce.
When weight distribution is over looked on a trailer, the tongue weight at the far rear will actually lift the front of the vehicle. Since the front wheels control the steering of the vehicle and this will actually reduce traction, the vehicle will handle much differently. By using a weight distributing hitch, the tongue weight is converted from lifting force at the front to a stabilizing, level force. The vehicle will generally tow better and will exhibit less bounce, providing a safer, more controlled ride.
Sway prevents a different problem. Sway is caused by many factors, but can be adequately managed by the use of Sway controlling devices. The most common and economical means is a friction anti-sway bar. It is simply a 2 piece system that locks to the ball mount(vehicle) and the trailer. The friction bar is clamped between a pair of what are essentially brake shoes that will squeeze on this bar and reduce it's ability to pull forward or backward. By doing so, it reduces the ease of the trailer to swing, thereby keeping the trailer moving straight, even when small forces such as wind try to push side to side. We offer an economical, high quality Anti-Sway Bar by Husky.
The most advanced way of controlling both weight distribution and bounce is known as a dual-cam sway control(top left of this page). It works in conjunction with a weight distributing hitch to provide high performance sway management and vehicle leveling in one package. It is more reliable than an anti-sway bar and won't exhibit the wear associated with the friction pads. The 'cams' bolt to the trailer's A-frame, so you don't have to worry about storing an anti-sway bar. Common weight distributing equipment is used for this setup, so it is fairly easy to upgrade to the dual-cam. We may even be able to offer you a trade-in on your old anti-sway bar.
